AWAKENING TO WORSHIP (ATW)

Our Children’s Service at Grace Covenant is called Awakening to Worship or ATW. It is offered to children ages four years old through 1st grade. Our ATW program is based on the books Young Children and Worship by Sonja M. Stewart and Jerome W. Berryman and Following Jesus by Sonja M. Stewart. The authors believe that, “Children learn to worship in a special place apart from the worshiping congregation so they become able to worship meaningfully with the congregation.”
Therefore this special children's service takes place during our congregation's worship service. Children start worship with their families in the sanctuary and at the conclusion of the Children's time, our ATW volunteer "greeter" with escort the children to our ATW sanctuary in Room 12. Our volunteer "storyteller" will be ready and waiting to lead the children through various parts of our worship service.
The children learn to:
- Assemble in God’s Name (The Call to Worship, The Greeting, Songs of Praise with sign language)
- Proclaim God’s Word (Bible Story, Learn to Pray)
- Give Thanks to God (Preparing the Lord’s Table, rayer of Thanksgiving, The Lord’s Prayer, Feast-Communion)
- Go in God’s Name (Hymn, Charge, Blessing
Our Bible stories include stories such as “Noah", told using wooden pieces or a parables like “The Mustard Seed,” told using flat pieces. The children also learn stories about “How the Church Tells Time” and “Baptism.”
Parents pick up their children from Room 12 at the conclusion of worship.
Awakening to Worship is open to children of church members and visitors.
